Nie zgubiliśmy drogi

The two narrative threads barely touch, and yet their protagonists always feel like they’re together. Eryk is a Cervantes expert, middle- aged and has been fired from his university job for his strange behavior and political statements; Ewa is a translator, in her 30s, although she only earns money teaching English and taking care of old people. Neither fits into their respective family. Both seem cast adrift from society and what it expects of them, alone even when surrounded by other people, brought together by the summer light and the same strange camera perspectives and washes of music that envelop them, separate entities connected by a position, a state of mind, a restlessness, by words.
They each read the same passages from the book about the burning lake, a smooth, metallic surface that becomes flecked with patches of brightness as the sun retreats, just like in the black-and- white photos that have been placed between the pages; as water flows over them, their grain flows and quickens, memories of past possibility that could yet form future escapes. We never see the lake, just the road that might lead there, it is a journey, a destination, another state of mind. We haven’t lost our way. (James Lattimer)
