If you’re prepared to pay 1250 US dollars and make a reservation to dine several months in advance at a place that only seats twelve people and doesn’t allow cellphones inside, you should be ready for a big and special night. That’s what can happen to you when you go to Hawthorne, an ultra chic restaurant located on an island in the Pacific Northwest. Run by the pompous Chef Slowik (Ralph Fiennes), it’s a place visited only by the ultra-rich or those willing to spend a lot for an unforgettable night.
THE MENU is about a young couple’s experience there. Tyler (Nicholas Hoult) and Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) join the small group of selected guests (actors, writers, tech investors, wealthy people of all kinds) for a very special night out. But it doesn’t take long for them to realize that this is going to be something more life-changing, or maybe even life-ending, than just a good dinner. A dark comedy about privilege, this film by the veteran TV director pokes fun at the pretensions and obsessions of the “one percent” using food as an universal language and the class struggle as the weapon of choice.
