Mensch, Mami, wir dreh'n 'nen Film

Film in film is a central thread in Christoph Schlingensief’s work from the very beginning, as one can see in this raw gem of an “amateur” comedy. A small town family wants to make a film, and the whole enterprise moves to the edge of catastrophe. This work already exhibits what one critic saw as “a very deliberate collaging of different layers of reality”, or, to put it another way, a free reinterpretation of Joseph Beuys’ dictum “Everyone is an artist.”
