What is a film if not the sum of the hidden forces beneath its images? It’s no coincidence then if a city park is thus reminiscent of an ancient forest, and a ghostlike figure can speak in the name of a forgotten Indigenous people. Shot on a shoestring budget during Klotz and Perceval’s stay in São Paolo, MATA ATLANTICA is an elegy for the Amazonian souls lost in the process of genocide and colonisation. Mindful of symbolic flux, the duo seek to reveal the deep chant of the world, its irresistible appeal. It’s as if, for their protagonists, there was never any other option but to break away.
