It’s Minja’s eight birthday and soon there will be a party, although it’s hard to pinpoint exactly when it starts, how long it goes on for, and when it has drawn to a close. Like CELTS as a whole, the party hardly follows a standard trajectory, it’s more just a constant ebb and flow of arrivals, departures, conversations, flirtations, capturing everyday life and its textures, wry cultural references of a bygone era, and moments of complicity or solitude far more about mood than narrative payoff. The children playing together in the living room are obsessed with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the adults in the kitchen get drunk on secondhand spirits and talk theatre, socialism, and Slovenian succession, how they precisely relate to one another remains unexplained, any number of couplings seems possible, old or new, permitted or otherwise.
This is Serbia in 1993, a country at war, and the events of the last years find their way into everything, although this is no dry history lesson, but rather a slyly revisionist ramble of great tenderness and calm; sexual fluidity is a national narrative too. When you climb the tree outside in the garden, the whole of Belgrade comes into view. (James Lattimer)
