A Chiara
This is the closing part of a trilogy more connected by specific themes, by showing different facets of a world (the province of Reggio Calabria, more specifically the city of Gioia Tauro), and by its relationship with various types of criminal activities, than by telling a unified story.
A CHIARA focuses more directly on the criminal world on a larger, bigger scale: the so-called ’Ndrangheta, the Calabrian mafia. But it does so from a lateral perspective, recounting the experiences of Chiara Guerrasio, the teenage daughter of a man who is a big part of the organization with deep roots in the area. As in his previous films, director Jonas Carpignano does not create heroes or villains, nor does he distribute blame or choose sides. He presents instead a complex world and a confused character that has to understand how to live in it.
In its extraordinary final ten minutes, the plot places Chiara and the viewer in a strange, unexpected situation. And the film gives another twist on the themes it deals with: family relationships and friendships but, fundamentally, power, money, and the temptation to always be around them. (Diego Lerer)
