All about My Sisters

An epic documentary set in an unspecified Chinese city: filmmaker Wang Qiong deals with her family so intimately and directly that it is often more than painful to watch.
The focus is on her younger sister Jin, who was supposed to be aborted in the 1990s at the height of the People’s Republic’s rigid one-child policy – like so many other babies, most of them, but by no means all of them, girls. Her parents risked their lives in so doing, ultimately changing their minds and “merely” abandoning her. She was adopted by her uncle and also lived with her birth parents for a while without ever finding out her precise bond with them. They are eaten away by feelings of guilt, just like the other uncle who was responsible for the ruthless enforcement of family planning in his village.
The rifts that politics has torn across families and generations are far from being closed again, something that doesn’t change even when Jin becomes a mother herself. ALL ABOUT MY SISTERS is a passionate, haunting film that is carried by Wang Qiong’s love for her family, even if or precisely because it doesn’t gloss over anything. (Andreas Ungerböck)
