Les Habitants

Maureen Fazendeiro presents a suburban village as a constellation of its inhabitants. Continuing her exploration of poetic truths that transcend the visible/invisible binary, the film explores the subtle tension between what is seen and what is heard. As the camera drifts over bucolic scenes of ordered prosperity, we hear a woman reading a letter to her daughter, reflecting on her life and the lives of those around her. Daily routines pass quietly by as her words reveal the struggles of Roma families, their absence on screen keenly felt in the landscapes they’ve made home. While some residents offer support, others call for bureaucratic intervention. These conflicting emotions reveal how compassion and distrust shape social relations, and yet the film’s crystalline prose also celebrates quiet moments of solidarity and friendship—gestures that go beyond charity or empathy. Through measured pans and thoughtfully composed shots, Fazendeiro’s camera observes this world without judgment. Ultimately, LES HABITANTS transforms everyday correspondence into a poetry of resistance, asking us to confront vital questions about home and belonging. (Hyun Jin Cho)
