Fjord
A bruise on a teenage girl’s body is all it takes for the quiet order of a remote Norwegian village to unravel. There is no refuge in FJORD. From the very first frame, Cristian Mungiu traps his characters in a world where every gesture is monitored, every word might serve as evidence, and suspicion spreads faster than truth. A devout Evangelical family—a Romanian father, his Norwegian wife and their children—leaves Bucharest for the supposed tranquillity of Norway’s western fjords, only to discover how easily doubt hardens into certainty. Refusing easy binaries, Mungiu patiently dismantles the assumptions driving the investigation, revealing how ideological conviction can become as inflexible as the system that claims to defend neutrality. Tudor Vladimir Panduru’s austere, crystalline cinematography turns the fjord into a landscape of watchfulness, where beauty and menace coexist. Renate Reinsve is extraordinary as a mother concealing despair beneath an impassive surface, while Sebastian Stan excels as a proud, authoritarian, yet deeply loving father. Tense, intelligent and morally unsettling, FJORD is less concerned with discovering the truth than with exposing the moment when a community no longer needs it. (Maria Giovanna Vagenas)
