As filhas do fogo

The “Daughters of Fire” keep returning in Pedro Costa’s cinema. They were the blazing faces of the Cape Verdean women at the start of CASA DE LAVA, they’ve inhabited installations in museum halls, or chanted in performances with baroque ensembles. Here they emerge from a shimmering darkness: three women in three adjacent frames, their voices combining to sing about the suffering of their people. We’ll see them again: these eight tempestuous minutes, part oratorio, part screen test, part trailer, part altarpiece, prefigure the Portuguese master’s next work. (Antoine Thirion)
