Everytime
A text message waiting for a reply, a forgotten photograph, the pixellated horizon of a videogame: in EVERYTIME, Sandra Wollner turns the most ordinary fragments of contemporary life into thresholds of mystery. Following a family grappling with a loss that continues to shape their everyday lives, the film starts out in Berlin before moving to Tenerife’s volcanic landscapes, tracing out a journey at once intimate, unflinching and quietly transcendent. Rather than treating grief as a subject, Wollner approaches it as a disturbance of time and perception. Screens, images and digital traces become emotional territories where the living continue a silent dialogue with what can no longer be fully grasped. Gregory Oke’s luminous cinematography gives the film its hypnotic atmosphere, while Birgit Minichmayr, Lotte Shirin Keiling and Tristán López deliver performances of remarkable sensitivity and restraint. Eschewing easy consolation, EVERYTIME inhabits a liminal space all its own. Elusive and profoundly affecting, it invites us to surrender to its shifting logic until chronology itself starts to loosen its grip and the visible world begins to shimmer with unexpected possibilities, fragile yet strangely luminous all at once.
