FANTASTIC CHOMÓN, organized by the Filmoteca de Catalunya, brings together 13 films that the director, cinematographer and animation wizard created in Barcelona, Paris, and Turin between 1904 and 1913. The program places a special focus on the work that he did for Pathé Frères, a real “film empire” at the time. It was here that Chomón spent his most brilliant period and where he became one of the leading figures in special effects, a mainstay of early cinema. Chomón knew how to alter space and time with the camera, building the foundations of film animation. It was at Pathé that Chomón directed his most iconic and ground-breaking film HÔTEL ÉLECTRIQUE, in which stop-motion and pixilation formed the cornerstone of the entire production. It would become a benchmark in the history of film animation, giving birth to a visual language that is still being constantly reinvented to this day as it adapts to the latest technologies, while still maintaining the same playful spirit as it alters time and space.
