Letters bring together two people, two places and two moments in time. In film, the juxtaposition of sound and image can do the same. Netherlands-based artist Fiona Tan revisits the personal letters she received from her father after she relocated from Australia to Amsterdam to study art in the late 1980s. Gently read out loud by Scottish actor Ian Henderson, the letters become a voiceover for black-and-white and hand-tinted footage shot in the Netherlands in the early 20th century resurrected from the archives of the Eye Filmmuseum, who commissioned her to make this piece on the occasion of her recent solo exhibition. While people from over a hundred years ago gather and work onscreen, Tan’s father—in words written decades later—shares reflections on global events alongside family anecdotes and personal musings. While the juxtaposition opens a conversation on the unceasing nature of time, it equally serves as a reminder that each memory, no matter how personal, stems from a moment in time that is also shared with others. Despite not speaking or appearing herself, DEAREST FIONA may be Tan’s most personal film, as her father’s words give their loving relationship a form irreducible to mere sound and image.
