It must have been a privilege for Bruno Jorge to be able to film an expedition to the Javari Valley in the northwest of the Amazon. Led by a group from the Brazilian FUNAI (Fundação Nacional do Índio) agency, which protects the rights of Indigenous peoples, together with some Indigenous representatives and health professionals, this painstakingly planned mission came to fruition in 2019. Its main objective was to help a group of Korubo long isolated from their own people to reunite with them. Always in bloody disputes with neighbouring peoples, the Korubo had managed to avoid contact with outsiders until that same year. Jorge’s detailed record of the expedition, which evokes the best of the Robert Gardner tradition, is nothing more than an anthropological adventure that captures a radically different ethos. They discover a system of emotional codification before the camera that also presupposes a set of singular physical gestures and an amazing, interactive, shared relationship between the individual expression of a feeling and the affective, mimetic solidarity of the community. All this and more forms part of one of the biggest cinematographic finds in years. (Roger Koza)
