Conditio Humana
One of the cinema’s leading portrait artists, Friedl vom Gröller offers a brief study in comparative aes- thetics. CONDITIO HUMANA provides close examinations of the medieval gargoyles on the exterior of the Basilica of San Michele Maggiore in Pavia. Vom Gröller sets these distorted images of once-living forms against close-ups of friends and acquaintances, juxtaposing the then and the now. Is it possible that if the film survives for another fifteen centuries, its performers will look just as strange to future viewers? (Michael Sicinski)
