Following his critically acclaimed landscape masterpiece GLI INDESIDERATI D’EUROPA, Italian filmmaker Fabrizio Ferraro invites the viewer to join him on an intimate and melancholic journey through memory and history. The project started when the filmmaker was in the heart of Berlin to present his previous film at the Volksbühne; while waiting for his screening to begin, he had the opportunity to take a walk along the former course of the Wall. While reflecting on the violence of Europe’s recent history and on those who risked their lives to escape repression, he decided to start working on CHECKPOINT BERLIN.
On screen, Ferraro creates an enigmatic visual labyrinth to fuse past, present, and future, made up of archival found footage, black- and-white images of a contemporary Berlin, and dramatized color scenes linking the escape of an East German couple to a legend about the filmmaker’s uncle, who acted as a passeur during that time. The film reflects the anguish of those who lived between the two sides of a divided city via a physical and mental journey, dissecting personal histories across the idea of a border that split the city for almost 30 years.
