Blind Date

Jan Soldat has become one of the cinema’s premiere chroniclers of contemporary sexuality, adopting a participant-observer ethos with respect to his subjects. The result is a disarming intimacy that goes well beyond the physical. Seemingly introverted men blossom before Soldat’s camera, and BLIND DATE is no exception. A brief, somewhat formalist document of an afternoon hookup, BLIND DATE is a potent articulation of the gulf between desire and sociality, anonymity and care. The difference between the two men’s affect is highly pronounced, but this allows us to perceive Soldat’s own compassionate gaze as well. (Michael Sicinski)
