Over two decades, German experimental filmmaker Jan Soldat has devoted his art to exploring one primary subject: ordinary people whose lives and identities typically remain hidden from view. BERND, one of two new Soldat films screening at this year’s Viennale, is a poignant, dignified portrait of a man in late middle age. Bernd appears completely naked as he moves with Soldat through his small, well-lit flat. He maintains eye contact with the camera while displaying both his own body and the various rooms that contain his life. (Michael Sicinski)
