Nervous energy courses through this breathtaking, compact character study of a young woman on the verge. Twenty-something Anne (a fearless Deragh Campbell) works at a day care center, but her carefree style clashes with the predictability expected around children. The demands of daily life sometimes feel too much for her, and every other conversation can turn into a fragile personal reckoning of some sort. But Campbell and director Kazik Radwanski avoid a tidy story of decline as we watch Anne face her frustrations with her place in life. As the film crafts a nuanced portrait on a moment to moment basis, it also taps into tensions and sensations that many may recognize from the existential confusion and loneliness of forging your own path in your twenties. Radwanski (who also brought his singular debut feature TOWER to the Viennale) makes his mark among a generation of young Canadian filmmakers in his dynamic staging of this whisker-sensitive picture of fraying autonomy. Yet it is all powered by Campbell’s headlong commitment to the role. Rather than gawking at Anne’s state of mind and milking it for dread, the movie brings us into her orbit and lets us know what it’s like to feel perpetually up in the air. (Nicholas Rapold)
