Die Filme nach den Film-Filmen: Theaterfilme
Das vorliegende Programm ist eine kleine Sensation. Es wurde von Frieder Schlaich (Filmgalerie 451) extra für die Viennale aus dem Nachlass von Christoph Schlingensief zusammengestellt und bietet vorläufig eine sehr einzigartige Gelegenheit, filmische Arbeiten, die in anderen Kontexten entstanden sind, erstmals auf der Kinoleinwand zu sehen. „In erster Linie bin ich Filmemacher“: Das, was ihn das Kino gelehrt hatte und was er am Kino vermisste, übertrug Schlingensief in experimentelle Montagen, in Drehs, die selbst zu Performances wurden, in Räume, in denen – siehe etwa die Animatografen – es plötzlich möglich wurde, das Bild selbst zu betreten und in bewegten Bilder selbst in Aktion zu treten. Schlingensief: „Das, was wir da als Theater präsentieren, ist ja dem Film durchaus verwandt. Da gibt es analoge Beziehungen, Reflektoren. Das ist der Moment, ich stehe vor der Kamera; ich bin in der Kamera. Ich stehe vor meiner Welt – ich bin in der Welt. Ich trete in meinen eigenen Film.“

As Christoph Schlingensief became ill and his death drew near, the more he worried about his cinema work (even the short sketches) being adequately archived, whether his whole oeuvre would be able to enter into dialogue with future audiences – and collaborators. This program of “theatre films” (often clips made for and around stage shows) edited by Frieder Schlaich gives a first glimpse of what can be found in the “Schlingensief Filmarchiv”. “With every examination of his films, plays, TV series, installations, and performances, new answers present themselves to the same questions: How did Schlingensief create an atmosphere that oscillates between seriousness and playfulness, keeping the viewer on constant alert and making them a participant in the action? How did Schlingensief accomplish that exceptional state of nebulousness and confusion with which he infected everyone involved like a virus, bringing them to take a critical look at their world and own attitudes?” (Anna-Catharina Gebbers)
