Protagonist in
BIERMANN
Wolf Biermann was born in Hamburg in 1936 and moved to the GDR in 1953. He is a singer-songwriter, poet, and writer, and is regarded as one of the defining voices of German post-war culture. Due to his critical lyrics, he was subject to a comprehensive performance and publication ban in the GDR starting in 1965. In 1976, following a concert in Cologne, he was stripped of his East German citizenship while abroad, an event that triggered one of the largest waves of protest among GDR artists and intellectuals. Since then, he has lived in Hamburg and continues to perform internationally as a musician and writer. In Jens Meurer's documentary BIERMANN, dedicated to his life and work, he appears as himself.
