Victor Kossakovsky is one of the most significant contemporary documentary filmmakers. He began his career in 1978 at the Documentary Film Studio Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) as a camera assistant, assistant director, and editor, and completed advanced courses for screenwriters and directors in Moscow in 1988. His first feature film BELOVY (THE BELOVS) (1993) gained international recognition, winning the VPRO Joris Ivens Award and the Audience Award at IDFA. Throughout his career, he created works that redefined the language of documentary film, including SREDA (MITTWOCH, 19.07.1961) (1997), PAVEL I LYALYA. IERUSALIMSKIY ROMANS (PAVEL AND LYALYA: LOVE STORY) (1998), TISHE! (RUHE!) (2002), SVYATO (2005), ¡VIVAN LAS ANTÍPODAS! (2011), VARICELA (2015), AQUARELA (2018), GUNDA (2020), ARCHITECTON (2022) and TRILLION (2025). His films have received over a hundred international awards and been selected by the world's most renowned festivals, including IDFA, CPH:DOX, Sundance Film Festival, Venice International Film Festival, and the Berlinale. TISHE!, ¡VIVAN LAS ANTÍPODAS!, and GUNDA were nominated for the European Film Award for Best Documentary, while AQUARELA and GUNDA were both shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
