Born in 1959 in Overland Park (Kansas), USA. Interrupts a study of art history in Harvard in favor of filmmaking. First short film A HERO OF OUR TIME (1985-1987) with Dennis Hopper, shown in Sundance in 1992. He experimented with narrative forms and directed his first long film TWISTER in 1989. For the short film THE ROCKING HORSE WINNER (1997) he uses a Pixelvision toy camera.
Other films (selection): NADJA (1994), TRANCE (1998), HAMLET (2000), NEW ORLEANS, MON AMOUR (2008), EXPERIMENTER (2015), MARJORIE PRIME (2016). ESCAPES was produced by Wes Anderson. His films are shown regularly at the Viennale.
