Lee Anne Schmitt is an artist and filmmaker based in Los Angeles. Her work moves between political thought, personal experience, and an engagement with landscape and the material traces of political systems—often realized on 16mm film. Thematically, her films address topics such as American exceptionalism, labor and utilitarian logic, gestures of kindness and refusal, racial violence, cowboy mythology, trauma, narration, and the potency of solitude.
Her works have been shown internationally at institutions including MoMA New York, the Getty Museum, RedCat Theater, Centre Pompidou, and Northwest Film Society, as well as at major festivals such as CPH:DOX, Oberhausen, Rotterdam, BAFICI, and FIDMarseille. Schmitt has received numerous honors, including a Graham Foundation Grant and a Creative Capital Award. Her most recent works include the film EVIDENCE (2025).
