Born in Bad Aussee (Styria) in 1944, actor, director.
Engagements in Tuebingen, Salzburg, Duesseldorf, Vienna (Theater in der Josefstadt) and Munich. Since 1971 member of the Burgtheater company (some intervals). Highlights of his stage career were "Jedermann" ("Everyman") at the Salzburg Festival (1983-1989) and "Hamlet". International breakthrough as a film actor in I. Szabó's adaptation of the K. Mann novel MEPHISTO (1981, awarded the Oscar in the category "best foreign film"). Stage and film director ("Georg Elsner, einer aus Deutschland", 1989).
