For the past five years Austrian director Friedl Kubelka has been running her own school in Vienna, teaching independent – and, indeed, completely autonomous – filmmaking. Here, the pleasure of cinema begins with the material: The Filmschule Friedl Kubelka works exclusively with analog, Super-8 and 16mm film. Kubelka’s main interest lies in the possibilities of different photographic films and their characteristics. The Viennale presents a selection of 17 short works that were created at the film school and the «Filmkoop» (a group of former students, founded in 2009).
In 2009, former students of the school founded the filmkoop wien. In its laboratory/studio in Vienna's 8th district, filmkoop enables independent work with film material, develops, edits and projects Super-8, 16mm and 35mm film, thus passing on the craftsmanship of analog film.
