TONITE LET’S ALL MAKE LOVE IN LONDON

One of the few film-makers trusted within the perfumed gardens of the 60ies rock illuminati, Whitehead was allowed unparalleled access into the centre of the pop circle to capture the moment for his kaleidoscopic film. With contributions from the likes of Mick Jagger, Michael Caine, Julie Christie, Lee Marvin and David Hockney, Tonite Let's All Make Love in London presents a dazzling and intimate record from the very core of the «in-crowd». With music by Pink Floyd, among many others. «Not a documentary in any ordinary sense», said «Variety», «but rather an impressionistic view of the land of mod as seen by a sympathetic participant.»

Taking its title from Ginsberg, Tonite Let's All Make Love in London pushed vérité into new shapes. Shot on the streets and in the clubs, the film makes extensive use of freeze-frames and other editing devices that bring to mind the spacey production techniques of psychedelic pop. A documentary on a semi-imaginary phenomenon, Tonite Let's All Make Love in London is torn between Whitehead's need to celebrate the extraordinary cultural explosion going on around him and his desire to unravel the media mythologizing - a task made complex by the heterogeneity of what had been lumped together as «Swinging London» in «Time»'s spring 1966 cover story.
