Holly Martins arrives in post-war Vienna, a town filled with black-market intrigue and split four ways by the triumphant Allied Forces. Martins has traveled to Vienna for a job offered by his old friend Harry Lime. Martins is a less than successful adventure writer, and he needs the job. Unfortunately, he learns upon his arrival that Lime has recently been hit by a car and died. Holly arrives at the funeral just in time to see the graveside service conclude. Martins is picked up by Major Calloway, who drops another bomb on Holly: Lime was a racketeer, and a bad one at that. Holly cant accept this, so he begins his own impromptu investigation. He starts scouring Vienna for any clue or any witness he can question concerning Limes death. (James White)
