A half-moon illuminates the sky over a gloomy mass of trees whose foliage sways slightly in the nocturnal air. After a few seconds, music starts playing, its rhythm following the movement of the tree branches: wind instruments, the voice of a woman, it is the beginning of the seventh movement of “Pierrot Lunaire” by Schönberg, “Der kranke Mond”. After this opening, the film alternates between three series of shots: wheat fields at dawn, three men, three Pierre who successively sleep in the same bed, the work of a baker, Simon making three loaves of bread. And, the uncanny heart of the film: a statue of Saint Roch. A melancholic statue that suddenly comes to life and glides towards the unknown. It gives the impression that it sings, that the music spreads to the film from the mute stone. Who dreams what, and who? Do the sleepers dream of a singing statue? Or is it rather Saint Roch who, carried away by the play on first names, in his somnambulant reverie, associates the sleep of some with the work of another? (Cyril Neyrat)
