«My outsides used to die tough in those days, leaving the god damndest unburnable corpse every time. Nightcats comes somewhere in mid change, beginning as a kind of continuation of something stumb led on in the cat sequence of In Between. It began with my seeing the black cat as the night, everything of the cat world being created out of him and returning into him - dreamed of first as simple color happening, then becoming color and form, and finally perfected to his very movements, there being not one rythm in the entire film which isn't as intricately vital as an entity in a theme and variations in music.»
