Inspired by Michel Foucault's book, the film related an incident that took place in the Normandy countryside in 1835, when a peasant aged 20 slit the throats of some members of his family. As soon as he had been imprisoned, the boy whom numerous witnesses described as a strange young man, started to write a «Memoire», in which he described the circumstances that led him to commit his crime. In 2006 Nicolas Philibert, assistent director of Allio in 1976, decides to return to Normandy to seek out the transient actors of the film in order to shoot Retour en Normandie.
