MEMENTO
Guy Pearce stars as Leonard Shelby, a man out to avenge his wife's murder. He's got no short-term memory, so every step he takes, he must take again. He scribbles down notes, takes Polaroids of everyone he meets, and tattoos facts on his body. It's a tough way to solve a murder. Think Groundhog Day with a gun. Told backwards in time, Memento places us into the same situation as Leonard: never knowing what came before. We travel with him until he forgets where he is, at which time we go back to the previous memory. Christopher Nolan follows up his promising debut, 1998's Following, with proof that the sophomore slump is just a myth. (Anthony Kaufman)
