This is the final film in Kaurismäki's trilogy, which has dealt with issues such as unemployment in Drifting Clouds and homelessness in The Man Without a Past. In Lights in the Dusk, Koistinen, a solitary security guard, meets a femme fatale, Mirja. Unbeknownst to Koistinen, Mirja is everything but the quiet fair-haired beauty that she first appears to be; she is a con artist, who runs with the mob, and eventually uses Koistinen as the fall guy for a crime. In characteristic Kaurismäki style, the dialogue is punctuated with deadpan surreal humour. «Shall we get married?» And as in every Kaurismäki film, there is a glimmer of hope. (Katja Pantzar)
