The Cat Leaves Home centers on two young twentysomethings, Suzu and Yoko, who end up becoming roommates. Although close friends since childhood, the two arent exactly the closest of friends; in fact, they are actually polar opposites. Of the two roommates, Suzu is the more cheerful, extroverted one, whereas the bespectacled Yoko is often gloomy, introspective, and bitter. In the course of the narrative, it is revealed that both women have been in love with the same man, a fact that serves both as a strange bond and an obvious division. Gradually, what begins as the normal everyday tensions between roommates escalates into a feud of dramatic proportions. Blackly comic, yet packing a surprising emotional punch, The Cat Leaves Home marks Iguchi Nami as one of the most promising new talents in contemporary Japanese cinema.
