H.E.A.L.T.H.
A large ensemble piece in the tradition of Nashville and A Wedding, this uses a Florida health foods convention (H.E.A.L.T.H. the letters stand for Happiness, Energy And Longevity Through Health), where the yoghurt and muesli industries engage in ludicrous rivalry, to take pot-shots at the way the American obsession with physical well-being is inevitably linked to money, vanity and the desire for status and power. Altman utilizes the hotel as a gathering place for numerous interrelated, interconnecting plot threads. The unifying theme is a satire of corrupt politics, a la Watergate. Playing the unflappable hotel manager, Alfre Woodard stands out in a stellar cast including Carol Burnett, Glenda Jackson, James Garner, Lauren Bacall, Henry Gibson, Dick Cavett, and Paul Dooley who co-wrote the screenplay with Altman and Frank Barhydt.
