WE CORNER PEOPLE

The people featured in the film call their village «a corner». They have no electricity and not even a single store. There are no more villages after this one - they sit on a tip of land. After completing the third grade, children have to walk to school for four hours every day. One day the river running through the village starts flooding, bursting its banks and sweeping away a young bride. The tragedy leaves the villagers devastated, giving them courage to demand a new bridge. Showing the simple village life of the people, the film manages to demonstrate how culture and poverty can go hand in hand, and shatters any preconceptions the viewers might have about the romantic, charming, natural and perpetually smiling people in Nepal's villages.
«When the Swiss NGO Helvetas, which has been helping communities to build trail bridges for decades in Nepal, asked me to make a film, I hesitated. A few thousand trail bridges had been built, and so there was nothing new. Then I had an idea: It was simple, I would focus on the village rather than on the bridge.» (Kesang Tseten)

This film is screened together with Life for a Child.
