For Sascha-Film in 1923, Michael Kertész made a film out of Arthur Schnitzler’s play “Der junge Medardus”, a historical drama about the son of a bookseller’s widow, who gets involved into Austria’s fight against Napoleon in 1809. Murderer of his lover out of disappointment, Medardus first becomes Napoleon’s involuntary guardian and later his potential assassin. Upon his execution, he is perceived as a patriotic hero.
