ENTLANG DER SEIDENSTRAßE - KINO IN ZENTRALASIEN
The film industries of the Central Asian republics Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan have long been subject to the financial and ideological input of the Soviet Union. After having become indepent in 1991, these countries have developed quite differently, and so have their cinemas. This documentary, sort of a companion piece to this year's VIENNALE retrospective, takes a close look at the five republics, their films, and their filmmakers. Some of them, like Darezhan Omirbaev, Serik Aprymov and Aktan Abdykalykov, have become known in the West as well.
