ELOGE DE L'AMOUR

In Praise of Love
Jean-Luc Godard
FRA, CH 2001

V'01

Rich in text and dense in subtextual connotations, both to Godard's earlier work and to art and intellectual history of the entire 20th century, Eloge de l'amour is a rigorously structured philosophical meditation on love, ageing, and, above all, the role of language and memory in shaping human consciousness, past and present. There is a lot to celebrate in this contemplative essay/poem. Complex yet serene, the film is a work of creative criticism, fiction and essay, interweaved together in one powerful format that expresses sadness and melancholy rather than protestation and anger. (Emanuel Levy)
