In a Kurdistan village near the Iraqi border, Faegh, his eleven children and three wives manufacture typical percussion instruments called dafs. Everyone pitches in according to his capacities, for the familys survival depends on the dafs. Buying and preparing the wood, tanning the hides the camera follows the various phases of work step by step. Through the manufacture of this instrument, which holds a special place in the Kurdish community, «this film portrays the lifestyle of this out of the ordinary family whose survival depends upon music», explains Ghobadi: «We enter into the life of this strange family by the excuse of music. They play this instrument on the birthday of an infant as well as in the mourning ceremonies.» The part that sound plays as a particular bond with the world and with religion is movingly highlighted when Faeghs eldest son, blind from birth like several of his brothers and sisters, sings to God or lends an attentive ear to the beat of the daf.
