As with their earlier ensemble piece, Le Goût des autre, Jaoui and her writer-actor partner Jean-Pierre Bacri have again set in motion a group of discontended urbanities, conflictedly bohemian-bourgeois, who practice the fine arts of humiliation and chagrin. No one stays pure victim for long: those badly treated turn around and «pass on the universal thump», as Melville put it. Jaoui has mastered the dramatic irony of characters saying something crueler or more indifferent than they intended, and then watching in horror as the damage sinks in. The films look is handsome enough, the mise-en-scène exquisitely supportive of its fine cast. What Woody Allen has been trying to convey about caste, celebrity, and cultural work in the big city, Jaoui has nailed in this bitterly hilarious picture of Paris literary life. (Phillip Lopate)
