CARTE DE VISITE – DER VIENNALE-03-TRAILER

Drifting clouds: Thats all there is to see in Ernie Gehrs trailer for the VIENNALE. Thick grey smog moving slowly and majestically across the screen. At first, we can still hear a few birds screech but soon the roar of a plane engine drowns out everything else, getting louder and louder. Something is drawing near, yet remains invisible: the VIENNALE, hopefully. And really, the film fades to black, followed by an announcement of the festival. A festival trailer, impressively tranquil and simple.

On closer inspection, though, cant we see shapes that were undreamt of, amorphous at first sight, shapes that now shimmer, overlying one another? And doesnt the noise of the plane seem to grow fainter towards the end? What if this is not a beginning but something on its way out? Is the VIENNALE over already? Two trailers in one: a preview and a look back. Or neither, to be exact but the thing right in between.
