Loosely based on the character of Captain Ahab, protagonist of Herman Melville's famous novel «Moby Dick», Philippe Ramos's film offers his own reading of the life of a towering figure in American literature. It all begins in the mid-19th century, in the northeast of the United States. The young orphan Ahab is raised by his aunt, a pious and austere woman married to a dandy who has no qualms about using the whip to discipline the boy. Brave and bold, Ahab orchestrates a midnight escape from this prison-like existence by making it appear that he has died. He then begins a new life, free of all restraints, and discovers he has a passion for the sea. After having been temporarily taken in by a pastor, he enrols in a naval academy. From then on, he lives only for and through his greatest passion, the ocean. He becomes the formidable Captain Ahab and embarks upon a never-ending battle with a mysterious white whale known as Moby Dick. Capitaine Achab also relates to an earlier short film of the same title, and on the same subject, made by Ramos in 2003.
