Thieves World is the portrait of three men who are carrying out life sentences on the prison island of Ogny, 400 kilometers north of Moscow. Having started out to make a film about prisoners tattoos, director Hiltunen got to know the three men, and decided to tell the true stories of the men under the hard shells of the tattoos, how they live, what they think and feel. Ogny is known as a hard line prison, where inmates are kept away from one another, each in his own small cell. The daily monotony is interrupted only by guarded meals and outdoor exercise periods. Each inmate has had to develop his own method of staying alive.
