Already Jerry Lewis' first appearance in this movie is an homage: the dreamy Axel (Depp), half asleep on the long road through the desert with his uncle Leo (Lewis), the self-mademan and car dealer, sees him, in a distinctive resilient step and a broom, scurrying by a high pile of Cadillacs. This mixture of Kusturica's fantasms and absurd slapstick of Lewis' style remains prevalent for this film about dreamers, Eskimos and flying fish.
