ANOTHER YEAR
Gerri and Tom are a married couple whose domestic and professional lives are happy and stable: Gerri is a health counsellor, while Tom is a commercial geologist. Gerri and Tom, we come to feel, are one of life’s success stories, but their cosy situation sits in stark contrast with many of those around them: Ken is Tom’s childhood friend who eats and drinks too much and misfires on the romantic front; Ronnie, Tom’s brother, is a silent, lost figure; and Mary, a long-time friend of Gerri’s, is a glass-half-full depressive. With Another Year, Leigh seems more interested in what doesn’t change in our lives than what does: our long-term selves, rather than our short-term experiences. Time passes, events happen (some within our control, some not), but fate proves to be the most powerful force. (Dave Calhoun)
