World for Ransom
With his second feature film, Aldrich also proved himself as an independent producer. On the sets of the television series CHINA SMITH, which he was directing, he orchestrated breaks in filming to shoot an ultra-low-budget noir adventure with the show’s star, Dan Duryea, and his future regular crew. The result feels like a sketch for the great works soon to come: private detective Mike Callahan is hired by his former lover in Singapore to spy on her husband, who is involved in the kidnapping of a nuclear scientist. WORLD FOR RANSOM anticipates the atomic anxiety and Cold War paranoia of KISS ME DEADLY and reveals Aldrich’s visual ambitions within an arte povera existentialism. Its pseudo-exoticism evokes Josef von Sternberg, while the film is traversed by the first pair of morally ambiguous antagonists in Aldrich’s oeuvre. “WORLD FOR RANSOM was the first film that embodied what I wanted to express through cinema,” Aldrich remarked.
