With friendly contacts to the film aficionados of the "Cahiers du Cinema", Ruiz had arrived professionally in Paris. In addition to Cahiers editor Pascal Bonitzer in a leading role, other authors from the magazine act in this film adaptation of Pierre Klossowski's autobiographical, highly enigmatic debut novel, which Ruiz discovered by chance in a bookstore. The script, written together with Klossowski, about a Dominican monk who is struggling with more than just skepticism intertwines various levels of time and fiction in a manner that is as agile as it is opaque. Sacha Vierny's camera is also fantastically elegant in the first of his collaborations with Ruiz. (Silvia Hallensleben)
