When the dead rise from the grave, it’s mostly because they have unfinished business to attend to. If the revenant in question is none other than Marshal Tito roaming the streets of Belgrade at a time of severe human and economic crisis in 1993, things get even more complicated, amusing, and dark. Yet Žilnik is not interested in the former president of socialist Yugoslavia, who is played by “Mićko” Ljubičić, a fantastic comedic actor who bears very little resemblance with the man he is portraying. The director cares more about the people gathering around this ghost from the past, a ghost that represents “a gap in our identity“, as Žilnik once put it. Tito’s uniform is worn with the dusty dignity of a socialist memorabilia, serving as a catalyst for people to speak out about politics and their situation in life. Hilarious and tragic moments ensue in what appears like a direct cinema performance, even as a portrait of a confused people also comes into focus among the various nationalistic, nostalgic, and personal outbursts. This confusion is ideological and reminiscent of the famous quote from William Faulkner’s “Requiem for a Nun”: “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.“ (Patrick Holzapfel)
