Tbilisi in the first year after independence and shortly before the civil war, Sarajevo at the end of the war in what once was Yugoslavia. Austrian documentary film repeatedly looks to the east—even more so with the fall of the Iron Curtain. The traces of wars often serve as a focus. In Goran Rebić’s DURING THE MANY YEARS, people tell of the changes experienced since the breakaway from the Soviet Union; in Barbara Albert’s SOMEWHERE ELSE (made at the same time as Nikolaus Geyrhalter’s THE YEAR AFTER DAYTON), young people tell of the siege of the city and of trying to imagine a future.
This perspective belongs to the people in front of the camera, the filmmakers are there to be told about what they don’t know and which concerns them nevertheless. Albert later said that the experience of making this film helped her to understand that she feels a moral dilemma with the documentary form. Rebic was to return to Georgia a year later, when the war had already begun, to shoot his film AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD. The material from DURING THE MANY YEARS is thus revised and updated, caught up by yet another war and another film.

In the presence of Goran Rebić.
This film will be shown as part of the screening NACH DEM KRIEG IST VOR DEM KRIEG.
